In this edition of 'Meet the Teacher' we speak with Mr. Jeremy Guzman from the Secondary School.

Name: Jeremy Guzman - Secondary School Teacher - jeremy.guzman@marymede.vic.edu.au

What is your role at the College?

I currently teach Media from Years 9-12 and VET Media. I also coordinate the College Yearbook and run the Marymede Film School Co-Curricular Program with Ms Hopkins.

Tell us about an interesting project or topic that you are currently running with one of your classes?

The Year 11 Media students are creating a television news program called ‘Marymede Now’. As part of their assessment, each student is required to fulfil the responsibilities of a specialist role, such as a reporter or camera operator, and collaborate with their peers in small teams to produce a news story.

For this project, I also staged a breaking news event, which the class knew nothing about. When an anti-litter protest involving Ms Wake, Ms Bedford and the 7.1 Drama class broke out in Wurrun Common, ‘Marymede Now’ were first to arrive at the scene with exclusive coverage as the news unfolded!

What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Teacher?

The most rewarding aspect of being a Teacher is seeing students overcome a challenge and achieve their goals, be it academic or personal. Even the smallest achievement, like putting your hand up and having a go at answering a question, can take a lot of courage for some people and can cultivate the biggest feeling of success.

Fast Five:

Favourite Food: I have recently enjoyed trying Spanish and Mexican cuisine.

Favourite Movie/TV Show: This is very difficult for a Media teacher to answer! At the moment, my favourite film is Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), which won Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, and my favourite TV show is Glitch – a gripping new Australian drama on the ABC.

Hidden Talent or Something We May Not Know About You: I play the drums, piano and know a few chords on the guitar.

Favourite Sporting Team/Athlete: The Australian Cricket Team.

If You Could Pick Any 3 People as Dinner Guests, Who Would They Be and Why?:
Tina Fey - To make me laugh;

Dave Grohl - To provide me with creative inspiration;

Quentin Tarantino - To teach me how to be a better filmmaker.
