In this edition of 'Meet the Teacher' we speak with Mr. Trent Brownjohn, a member of our Health and Physical Education Teaching Team.

Name: Trent Brownjohn – Secondary Teacher – trent.brownjohn@marymede.vic.edu.au

What is your role at the College?

I am currently teaching Health & Physical Education and Maths within Years 7-12. I also coach a variety of sports. I live down in the Fitness Centre!

Tell us about an interesting project or topic that you are currently working on with one of your classes?

Currently with my Year 8 classes we are working on the topic of Water Safety. It’s something I am very passionate about as I used to volunteer my time as a lifesaver. I also love anything to do with water – surfing, swimming, scuba diving, fishing, boating. We live in a country surrounded by water but still too many people lose their lives by drowning.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Making a difference in someone’s life. It might be a student or even a colleague but to know I’ve helped them in some way makes me very proud. Helping someone learn a new skill, challenging someone or even making someone smile is so very rewarding.

Fast Five:

Favourite Food: Chicken Vindaloo

Favourite Movie/TV Show: Vanilla Sky

Hidden Talent or Something We May Not Know About You: Renovating - I consider myself a 'Handyman'!

Favourite Sporting Team/Athlete: Western Bulldogs, Newcastle United and the Chicago Bulls.

Ricky Gervais - Funniest man on Earth! He'll provide the laughs!

Jason Day - My favourite golfer plus I need some tips.

Jeff Buckley - Favourite artist who was taken too soon. I'd need him to sing to me and the other guests.

In this edition of 'Meet the Teacher' we speak with Miss. Krystal Crichton, A member of our Prep Teaching Team.

Name: Krystal Crichton – Prep 5 Homeroom Teacher – krystal.crichton@marymede.vic.edu.au

What is your role at the College?

I am the classroom teacher of Prep 5. You can find me in Room PR01 in the Prep House!

Tell us about an interesting project or topic that you are currently working on with one of your classes?

We are reading one of my favourite books at the moment, 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' written by Eric Carle. We have been focusing on all the different foods that the caterpillar ate and how the caterpillar turned into a beautiful butterfly. We also created our own classroom caterpillar by drawing what our favourite food is to eat!

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding thing about being a teacher is seeing your students grow in their learning. I love teaching Prep because the children learn so much! At my previous school, I taught Preps and at the end of the school year I would sit with each of my students individually, and we would look at the start of their writing books and see how they were writing when they first came to school, compared to the end of the year. It brings me much joy to see the growth of their learning.

Fast Five:

Favourite Food: Pad Thai

Favourite Movie/TV Show: Shawshank Redemption – I have watched the movie over 5 times and still love it!

Hidden Talent or Something We May Not Know About You: I am a black belt in Karate! It took 7 years for me to get my black belt - I remember going for my exam and having to do 400 push ups!

Favourite Sporting Team/Athlete: Collingwood Football Club. Travis Cloke was my favourite player since 2005 when he played his first AFL game, but unfortunately Travis has now gone to the Western Bulldogs!

If You Could Pick Any 3 People as Dinner Guests, Who Would They Be and Why?:

Nathan Buckley - to see what he and Eddie McGuire have planned for Collingwood to win the 2017 Grand Final this year!

Bart Cummings - he was a legend of the racing industry and won 13 Melbourne Cups. I enjoy going to the races over the Spring Racing Carnival.

Andy Warhol - when I was in Year 11 and Year 12 I studied Studio Arts and was inspired by Andy’s art. Last year I was lucky enough to see some of his artwork at Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain.

On the morning of Tuesday february 7, the College held it's annual Leadership Induction Assembly - a chance to acknowledge and induct our 2017 Student Leaders and congratulate our 2016 Year 12 high achievers.

This year, the College was honoured to welcome back Emma Wardell (2016 College Dux) who addressed students and spoke about her journey from Years 7-12 at Marymede Catholic College.

Additionally, we acknowledged and congratulated her fellow graduate Tinotendo Mubayiwa. Last year, Tino was accepted into the 2016 Top Designs Exhibition for his work in Product Design & technology - Wood. Not only was Tino 1 of just 5 to be selected, he is also the first student of African heritage to ever be selected for this prestigious honour.

Our 2017 Student Leaders were presented on stage and together they recited the 2017 Leadership Pledge - written and created by the students themselves.

Finally, the College acknowledged and introduced our Fire Carrier Students and was joined by Ms. Sherry Balcombe from ACM who inducted these students as our inaugural fier carriers.
