Exciting times lie in wait for Maya Dove (Year 10) who will soon get the chance for represent her state after recently being selected in the Victorian Squad to compete in the Kevin Coombs Cup, an annual tournament for Junior Wheelchair Basketball.

It’s an outstanding achievement for Maya, considering she has only been playing the sport for 2 years. “I started playing Basketball in 2013 so that I could join a team environment” says Maya, who now plays every Thursday night for The Saints in the Kilsyth & Mountain District Basketball Association.

Maya’s potential in the sport was identified in 2014 and she was soon selected into the Australian Women’s Team Development Squad. “Playing with the Australian development squad was a daunting experience. All my teammates were older than me and had been playing for a lot longer than I had. However it allowed me to gain more confidence in myself and I learnt a lot from the opportunity.”

Maya hopes that her Basketball endeavours will allow her to travel the world and compete for Australia, but for now her sights are solely focused on the upcoming Kevin Coombs Cup which will take place in Ballarat from Tuesday April 14 to Saturday April 18. Her preparation for the State team consists of weekly Sunday training, in addition to her regular weekly training with her local team.

Marymede Catholic College congratulates Maya on this outstanding achievement and wish her all the very best at her upcoming tournament and throughout her future sporting endeavours.
