Construction works on our new Marymede Trade Skill Centre commenced in June this year and have progressed smoothly, despite workers encountering large amounts of rock during the excavating process in addition to inclement weather conditions.
The steel frame for the building is now 90% complete and we anticipate the pouring of concrete to commence within the next fortnight. Once the building flooring has been completed, remaining construction works will progress extremely quickly, which will allow for the building to be complete prior to the conclusion of the 2015 School year, with classes ready to go by 2016.
You can view the progress through photos below:
In this edition of 'Meet the Teacher' we speak with Ms Judeline Wadhwani, member of our College Executive Team, Secondary School Teacher and Head of Faith & Mission (P-12).
Name: Judeline Wadhwani - Head of Faith & Mission (P-12) - judeline.wadhwani@marymede.vic.edu.au
What is your role at the College?
I am a member of the College Executive, Combined Leadership and Secondary Leadership Teams.
I also teach Religious Education for students in Years 10 and 11. I love teaching both classes. The students are magnificent: very open to exploring issues of faith in contemporary living and to discussing justice awareness responses.
Tell us about an interesting project or topic that you are currently running with one of your classes?
An interesting project which we launched this term is the Year 5 and Year 10 Learning-Teaching Linkage.
This pilot project involved teacher teams facilitating the collaboration between Year 10 RE and the Year 5 Inquiry Learning classes on the topics of Aboriginal History, Spirituality and present day Indigenous communities. The big picture for this learning linkage is to deepen the students’ awareness of the importance of Reconciliation through a considered response as 21st century learners.
Our Year 10 “scholar-teachers” are engaging superbly with their lesson preparation, asking lots of questions and coming up with loads of creative ideas for presentation to our Year 5s. RE classes are abuzz with learning and preparation.
A typical school day for me begin with Morning Prayer in the chapel which provides a beautiful start to the day through colleagues sharing thoughtful prayers and reflections accompanied by soul-stirring music. The school day involves a combination of teaching, Leadership Team meetings and planning with teams of staff and students for the various events that make up a robust spiritual life at the College.
Currently we are busy working with our student leaders at Years 5 to 12 for a “Mission-Action” focus for Marymede Day. All the funds raised from this fun-filled feast day will be donated to a charity that the student leaders nominate. We are also working on our first Year 11 Christian Leadership Retreat in late August and our first P-12 McAuley Guild Mass.
What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Teacher?
Relationships with the students and staff. When the penny drops for the students during the early weeks of learning-teaching that they can achieve whatever they set out to achieve with the “fire in their belly”, a most amazing transformation of capabilities can take place. Students are very generous with their time in serving the school. The 1000-Letterbox drop in the College neighbourhood to raise awareness about Human Trafficking is a fine example of our Year 12 students and their RE teachers going the extra mile to show that thinking citizens are formed in the classroom.
Staff support for one another is at the heart of everything we do. It was a grand experience to be “learners” in classes that our “savvier ICT-savvy” colleagues conducted on our Professional Learning Day.
Fast Five:
Favourite Food: Dosa (thin South Indian savoury crepe) with fresh coconut chutney.
Favourite Movie/TV Show: My Best Friend's Wedding.
Hidden Talent or Something We May Not Know About You: When it comes to displaying team spirit, I will even dance!
Favourite Sporting Team/Athlete: I prefer tennis so don’t have a favourite sporting team. My all time tennis hero – Andre Agassi because he played ace tennis, but more importantly because he was always decent and genuinely decent to the loser. Something Roger Federer could learn!!
If You Could Pick Any 3 People as Dinner Guests, Who Would They Be and Why?:
They have all gone to their eternal rest. Nonetheless, I would pick
Mahatma Gandhi & Nelson Mandela
Mother Teresa
Martin Luther King Jr.
They were people of great hope who were also top champions of non-violent means of attaining peace; something so relevant to our times. Mother Teresa is an unmatchable model of service towards the destitute.

In this edition of 'Meet the Teacher' we speak with Mrs Nicole Lawrenson from the College Administration Team.
Name: Nicole Lawrenson - Personal Assistant to the Deputy Principals - nicole.lawrenson@marymede.vic.edu.au
What is your role at the College?
I am the Personal Assistant to the Deputy Principals - Liz Crane (Primary) and Robyn Roberts (Secondary)
Provide us with a 'snapshot' into your daily routine at the College.
For me, a normal day at the College would involve providing secretarial and administrative support at a leadership level for both Deputy Principals. This often includes meeting co-ordination, diary management, adminsitrative support at meetings, answering phone calls and providing additional administrative support as required.
What do you love most about working at Marymede Catholic College?
Seeing students being provided with opportunities to reach their full potential and knowing that in some way, I may have contributed to that.
Fast Five:
Favourite Food: Lamb
Favourite Movie/TV Show: The Blind Side & The Green Mile
Hidden Talent or Something We May Not Know About You: I keep chooks and sheep! I also have a beehive.
Favourite Sporting Team/Athlete: Whittlesea Eagles FC - Under 10's and Under 17's (because my two sons play in those teams) and the Whittlesea Netball Club Rockets Under 13's (because my daughter plays in that team).
If You Could Pick Any 3 People as Dinner Guests, Who Would They Be and Why?:
Freddie Mercury - I'm a Queen tragic and a child of the 70's!
Russell Brand - For a bit of light hearted comedy with a twist.
My Dad - He passed away 5 years ago and there's so much that he's missed that I want to share with him.

Marymede Catholic College would like to thank all those in attendance at our 2015 Primary School Family Maths Night on Tuesday July 21, 2015.
It was a great sight to see so many of our parents learning with and from their children!
Students from Prep to Year 5 have recently been involved with Mathematics Inquiry culminating in entries for the Maths Talent Quest hosted by the Mathematics Association of Victoria.
Parents who attended the Family Maths Night were able to see and share in these investigations with their children and also participated in a range of fun maths games and activities throughout the evening in each of our Primary School Houses.
This event was a great success. Parents and students participated enthusiastically and were able to experience mathematics activities which could easily be continued at home.
We look forward to next year's event with great excitement!
Works on the new Food Technology kitchen are now complete. Photos of the new classroom, which will be used for Secondary School Food Teachnology classes commencing immediately, can be found below.
The new kitchen is a great addition to the College facilities, which now boast 2 designated Food Technology spaces, a Woodwork laboratory, Textiles laboratory, 5 Visual & Studio Art classrooms, 5 Science labs, private instrumental music classrooms, an Auditorium and our Trade Skills Centre (completion at the commencement of 2016).
In this edition of 'Meet the Teacher' we speak with Mrs Rochelle Coyle from the Secondary School.
Name: Rochelle Coyle - Secondary School Teacher/Head of Chisholm Guild - rochelle.coyle@marymede.vic.edu.au
What is your role at the College?
I am the Head of Chisholm Guild, a Secondary School English teacher (Years 9-12), and the C-Grade Debating Team Coach.
Tell us about an interesting project or topic that you are currently working on?
Chisholm has recently elected the Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project as our Guild Charity. Just like our Guild patron Caroline Chisholm, BASP offer support to new immigrants and advocate for the rights of Asylum Seekers.
My Guild and I excited about establishing an ongoing relationship between Chisholm and BASP.
What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Teacher?
It is always wonderful to see students reach their full potential and navigate a pathway they are passionate about. I love that even though I am their teacher, I am constantly challenged and learning new things from my students.
Fast Five:
Favourite Food: Chocolate
Favourite Movie/TV Show: Currently addicted to Masterchef.
Hidden Talent or Something We May Not Know About You: I am starting to develop a bit of a green thumb!
Favourite Sporting Team/Athlete: Collingwood Football Club
If You Could Pick Any 3 People as Dinner Guests, Who Would They Be and Why?:
My Husband - Because he's a better cook than me!
My Mum & Dad - Because they're always good company.
...and I better invite my Sister too!
