On the 22nd and 23rd of August 2015, Marymede Catholic College participated in the Tournament of Minds 2016 – Metro Northern Regional Finals held at La Trobe University, Bundoora.

The College had a total of two Primary teams participate in the Language Literature challenge facilitated by Ms. Beth Cilia, in addition to three Secondary teams participating in the Maths & Engineering, Social Sciences and Applied Technology challenges facilitated by Mr.Vinodh Narasimhan, Ms. Angie Bedford & Ms.Emma Kiely and Mr. Jeremy Guzman respectively.

The Tournament of Minds competition involves a six week long-term challenge and a spontaneous challenge provided to teams on the day. All challenges were released by the organisers on the 13th of July, 2015. Our students commenced their work on the challenge during this time. Teams had to find a solution for the long-term challenge and present it in a drama-style presentation. In addition, the students had to create props made of recycled materials as part of the challenge brief. The Maths and Engineering challenge this year required the students to make an invisible cargo vehicle, the Social Sciences challenge was about erasing important people from history, the Applied Technology challenge was to make a robot to clean the classroom out of mechano and the Language Literature challenge was about exploring the work of Australian author Aaron Blabey.

After countless lunch times and after-school sessions, all teams were ready to present their work at the Regional Finals. Our students presented their long-term challenge as a ten minute presentation. In addition, the students had to complete a secret spontaneous challenge which tested their creativity and team work. All teams did a fantastic job at the tournament and the feedback from the judges was very positive.

The Applied Technology team was declared winners of the Metro Northern Regional Finals and have been invited to participate at the State Finals to be held on the 13th of September, 2015 at LaTrobe University, Bundoora. This is a first in the history of Marymede Catholic College and we would like to wish the Applied Technology Team all the success at the State Finals.
