Dina Gris - Year 10, 2016
My painting represents the connection of humans to the environment, just as Pope Francis reflects on the words of Saint Francis of Assisi, who in the Canticle of the Creatures makes it plain that the earth is our common home. Even today, the saint’s ancient words inspire us, when he wrote that the earth “is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us”. We ourselves “are dust of the earth (cf. Gen 2:7); our very bodies are made up of her elements, we breathe her air and we receive life and refreshment from her waters.” The figure in my painting simultaneously comes from the earth and trees and is the earth and trees.
