Kani Ahuonbar - Year 10, 2016
My piece relates to both renewal and connection. It represents a person who cannot hold onto pain any longer and must express it through a scream. Connection is depicted through the cross between the happy and painful expression on the face of this ceramic head – the character is connected to inner feelings that have welled-up and have come to the outside. This mixed expression suggests that the character may be going through a tough time in life. Renewal is also suggested through this character’s call for help as such an emotional outburst may result in him regaining his inner strength. When I created my sculpture, I tried to look at every detail, shape and aspect of an expressive face. Pain is exhibited through the tightly closed eyes, the wrinkles and the furrows across the man’s forehead and nose. In contrast, the bottom half of the sculpture depicts a happier expression, which adds to the intensity of the expression.
